23 years after its premiere on television, the Power Rangers are back in fashion more than ever. The students recruited by Zordon will have to face Rita Repulsa again in 2017 and they will do it twice: film and video game.
At the New York Comic Con, the first trailer for the film starring Dacre Montgomery, Beck G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Elizabeth Banks and Bryan Cranston could be seen. Now, the time has come to metamorphose and review all the video games that Power Rangers have had from Sega Megadrive and Super Nintendo to the present day.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
Year: 1995
The success of the Power Rangers was increasing and in 1995 they had their first movie, which was also adapted into a video game. In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie , Billy, Kimberly, Tommy, Rocky, Adam, and Aisha (in the Nintendo version) and Billy, Kimberly, Tommy, Jason, Zack, and Trini (in the Mega Drive version) had to return to save the world.
The truth is that, except for the plot, we were facing the same game that came out in 1994, but with better graphics. Again, it was a side-scrolling or bet-’em-up action title in which we once again got into the shoes of these high school kids who are capable of becoming heroes overnight. This time, our enemies were Lord Zedd and his horde of minions. The final bosses we faced appeared in the second season of the series and there was also Ivan Ooze, the bad guy from the movie.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Fighting Edition
Year: 1995
The Power Rangers would be nothing without their Megazord and in this Super Nintendo title the Dinozord and Thunderzords are the protagonists. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition was still a 2D fighting title, similar to the previous ones, but with the grace of handling the robots and performing their most famous movements.
Power Rangers: Zeo Battle Racers
Year: 1996
Like Mario Kart, this is how Super Nintendo presented us with this Power Rangers video game. Based on the Power Rangers Zeo generation , it allowed us to race alone or in company, either with a split screen or battle mode.
Power Rangers Time Force
Year: 2001
Based on the ninth season of the Power Rangers that in Spain was known as Power Rangers: Guardians of Time . A police organization formed by the Power Rangers had to travel to the past to stop a dangerous criminal named Ransik and thus save the future. On the Game Boy it’s a traditional side-scrolling beat’em up platformer, while on the PlayStation it was a 3D action game for one or two players.
Power Rangers Wild Force
Year 2002
Armed with the wild force of the Power Animals formed by Bison, Tiger, Shark, Eagle and Lion, our Power Rangers had to face off against the evil ones who wanted to end nature. Power Rangers Wild Force is a 3D adventure that came out for the Game Boy Advance and that wanted to teach us to respect the fauna and flora of our environment with robot fights.
Power Rangers Ninja Storm
Year 2003
The Power Rangers have had several seasons on television and different reboots, in Power Rangers Ninja Storm the show of the same name was adapted to the Game Boy Advance. Like the previous games, it was a side-scrolling fighting title in which we could use any of the six Ninja Storm Rangers and their abilities. The moments in which we controlled the Megazords combined the action with Quick Time Events.
Chroma Squad
Year: 2015 and 2017 (consoles)
It’s not a Power Rangers game , it’s inspired by them. Instead of controlling the heroes of the series, this RPG proposes that we play specialist actors, who decide to create their own group of superheroes and create a TV series .
The development is of a tactical action game, with movement by squares and turn-based combat, with a retro aesthetic in isometric perspective (and a soundtrack that is also reminiscent of the 90s). Chroma Squad launched on PC two years ago, but it’s coming to consoles next year, and in addition to offering us combat and the possibility of improving our character, it also has a TV studio management part .
This indie game is a declaration of love for the characters, with a sense of humor and winks that any fan of the series will recognize, and it doesn’t forget anything, from the fights against the putties to the battles of giant robots (made of cardboard, yes indeed).
