The new film by M. Night Shyamalan: Glass , which will unite two of the director’s best films and represents the closure of the El Protegido trilogy, which began in 2000, has finally arrived on the big screen . If you plan to go see it, click here We tell you everything you need to know about this very particular and different saga of superheroes.
Shyamalan is a director with a career that can be defined as a roller coaster, sometimes he’s up with films like The Sixth Sense , and other times he’s way down with works that go unnoticed like After Earth . However, in 2016, he delighted us with Split, starring James McAvoy, who does a spectacular job of playing a character with multiple personalities. But he left us speechless by reintroducing David Dunn (Bruce Willis), star of The Unprotected . It was more than clear: all this was a trilogy of The Protected.
Taking advantage of the premiere of Glass , we review the key details you should know about the Unprotected trilogy .
1 .- The protagonists
We met two of the protagonists of the Unprotected trilogy 18 years ago, so it’s important that you remember who they are.
David Dunn (Bruce Willis)
He leads the Unbreakable trilogy since 2000. It is about a security guard who discovers that he is unbreakable and that he has the ability to see other people’s crimes when in contact with them. Throughout the first tape we see his transformation into a vigilante. His weakness is water, as he is terrified of drowning.
The Horde/Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy)
In 2016, Fragmented was released and there we met this character with multiple personalities. We discovered that some are more violent and possessive than others. But none like The Beast, the most dangerous of all because it makes Kevin physically transform into a being with enormous strength and thirsty for blood.
However, the set of their sickest personalities are known as The Horde. His weakness is saying his full name (Kevin Wendell Crumb) or exposing him to bursts of light.
Mr. Glass/Elijah Prince (Samuel L. Jackson)
However, the one who pulls the strings of the entire trilogy of The Protected is Mr. Glass. We met him from the first installment as a man who suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta or “glass bones”, which is his greatest weakness. Since his childhood he was obsessed with the idea that if he is someone so fragile, there must be someone unbreakable in the world.
So he pretty much pulled the strings of fate for Dunn’s abilities to blossom. And now he has something else in mind, as he is willing to unleash The Beast.
2.- The Eastrail 177 train accident
Actually the Unprotected trilogy is also known as the Eastrail 177 trilogy. The reference is to the train accident that triggers this whole story. If you don’t remember, almost at the beginning of the first film we see how the train where David Dunn travels suffers a fatal accident. However he is the only survivor of the 132 passengers. From that moment on, his superhuman abilities develop.
At the end of that film, we discover that Mr. Glass is the one who caused the accident, because he knows that only with such a fateful moment is it that the powers of a hero become present.
3 .- The sidekicks
In addition to the heroes and villains, The Protected trilogy has three other fundamental characters. Each of them has a special relationship with one of the protagonists:
Joseph Dunn (Spencer Treat Clark)
This is David Dunn’s son and we met him on the first tape. He returns for the last part of the El Protegido trilogy and appears as an adult who helps and guides his father in his facet as a vigilante.
Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy)
We met her in Split and she is the only survivor of The Beast. However, that was not a matter of luck, because this being was identified with her when he saw that she is broken like him. Also, she is the only one who was able to make The Horde disappear and made Kevin have, for a brief moment, control over her body.
Mrs. Price (Charlayne Woodard)
It’s about Elijah’s mother/Mr. Glass and even though she knows that her son has been locked up in a mental institution, she knows that her son is very special.
4 .- The representations
As we already said, M. Night Shyamalan can do great things where every detail counts. The Protected trilogy is not far behind, because even each of the protagonists has a designated color that perfectly describes his psyche.
David Dunn is represented by the green color of his raincoat because the color is generally associated with life-giving properties. So he is a life saver.
The mustard color represents The Beast, because it is associated with religious ceremonies. In reality, Shyamalan sees this character as an evangelist who wants to save the broken (like Casey).
Mr. Glass is represented by purple because it is associated with royalty and regal qualities. This is what Elijah looks like, as someone very important.
In fact, through Twitter he revealed that during the tape there are parts in which the primary colors become more dominant on the screen. That means the characters believe in the world of the comics. When the image is more monochrome it is because they are stopping believing.
