Unless you have been out of the business of printers for centuries or you are approaching this world for the first time, you will already know that there are many types of printers, capable of meeting the most diverse needs. Don’t worry though, because now we will show you the  main factors  to take into consideration when buying and that we ourselves have evaluated in choosing the models to recommend.

Dimensions : it may seem trivial, but it is not. There are printers of very different sizes and weights, an element that could become decisive for some of you, if the space where to house your new printer is particularly tight, or if you want it to go almost unnoticed in the decor of the room.

Print Speed : Some printers are capable of completing a print in seconds, others are significantly slower. This mainly depends on the type of printer chosen, which we will learn more about later. But start thinking about whether this factor can be decisive in the choice or not.

Print frequency, documents / photos, colors / monochrome : other very important factors to consider before purchasing, because there are printers that are more suitable for printing frequently, printers that are more convenient for printing documents in black and white, others that they perform best for printing photos, graphics and color documents. There are also models that excel in all these aspects, but obviously the price would go up a lot.

Noise : if you need to print frequently, perhaps even at particular times such as early in the morning or late at night, it might be wise to also evaluate the noise level of the press, so as not to be hated by neighbors, roommates or other family members.

Maintenance : printer spare parts, whether cartridges or toners, can also be very expensive. In evaluating the frequency of printing, it is also good to review the costs of refills for each model and the duration of the same, arriving at the best compromise in terms of quality and costs.

Wi-Fi connectivity, displays, NFC : some of the modern printers enrich their equipment with small displays, to be used independently from the PC, Wi-Fi connectivity for wireless printing and even NFC for an immediate connection to a device.

Sheet format : the vast majority of home printers print on classic A4 sheets (and then scale down to smaller formats). However, if you want to print on larger sheets (such as A3), you will need a specific printer.

The biggest dilemma to be solved when choosing the best printer for your needs is whether to opt for a laser printer or an inkjet printer (also defined with the English term  inkjet ). Given that an absolute winner cannot be decreed between these two very different technologies, let’s see what  the pros and cons  of each are.

Laser  printers  are generally larger and cumbersome and very often the cheaper models allow you to print only in grayscale (ie they are monochromatic). From them, however, they boast a much higher print speed (and therefore also a lower and less prolonged noise) and a lower cost per single print, given that the toners are so expensive, but ensure a much greater number of prints (in the order of thousands). Print accuracy is slightly lower and they are less suitable for graphic printing, but they are ideal for printing large quantities of documents.

Inkjet  printers  are generally cheaper in the initial purchase phase, but then the cost of the cartridges can be very high, also because they will need to be replaced frequently, even with medium-intensive use. Even the low-end models offer color cartridges, with which you can also dabble in photo printing, but the printing speed will often be low and the noise prolonged and rather high. They are ideal for those who print infrequently and above all need color prints if necessary.

By multifunction printer we mean a model that, in addition to printing obviously, also integrates a  scanner  for scanning documents and photos and, in some cases, even a  fax . The advantage is obviously that of being able to count on a more versatile device, capable of performing different tasks (or combined, as if it were a real copier).

Among other things, the costs of multifunction printers (especially if inkjet) are not much higher than those of a simple printer, so much so that the latter are almost disappearing from the market. The only cons concerns the  size , which grows compared to traditional printers (especially for laser multifunction printers), even if the most recent models still manage to contain them compared to a time. We therefore generally recommend that you buy a multifunction printer, because having a scanner at home ready to use can always come in handy.
