The favorable evolution of the covid during 2022 has made it possible to travel again. A year ago, just before Christmas, not even the most optimistic could imagine a summer with activity close to pre-pandemic levels.
However, the desire to travel and last-minute sales boosted tourism. Today, we face the future with greater guarantees and with the conviction that 2023 will be a year without major shocks. We resume projects that had been left in a drawer and we prepare to plan new journeys.
We are looking for ideas and the recent revelation of National Geographic’s Best of the world seems like an excellent source of inspiration. One more year, the publication has presented its particular list of the 25 most exciting destinations in 2023 on the entire planet; a selection made based on the opinion of its global editors that offers clues of the best destinations. The proposals are classified into five categories, four of them already common: family, adventure, culture and nature, and a new one, local communities, which focuses its attention on corners of the world that innovate in terms of ecotourism, sustainability and contact with culture.
The list offers a range of original possibilities to travel next year from a responsible perspective
In other words, the list offers a range of original possibilities to travel next year from a more responsible point of view than ever, with the aim of improving the lives of the native populations. Some of these destinations are little known and, for one reason or another, deserve a chance to be discovered. Do you want to meet them?
Dodecanese Islands (Greece)
Olympos, a small town on the island of Kárpazos.
The Dodecanese is an archipelago in the Aegean Sea made up of twelve large islands and dozens of other tiny ones, located off the Turkish coast. Historically prized by different civilizations, it is today a haven of beauty and peace. Among its best-known islands, those of Rhodes or Kos stand out, but others such as Kárpazos are a still unknown paradise that is torn between the need to attract tourism and the challenge of maintaining their traditional way of life with it.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA)
Milwaukee is preparing for 2023 with numerous initiatives aimed at revitalizing the city. The largest city in the state of Wisconsin, which boasts its extraordinary Harley-Davidson museum, is developing various projects that range from the construction of a new district -the Deer- in an old clearing of empty houses, to the opening of several river walks and cultural centers.
Alberta (Canada)
Located in the west of Canada, Alberta stands out for its natural charms. Among its pearls, Banff stands out, one of the national parks of the Rocky Mountains, along with cities like Edmonton, the capital, or Calgary, the most populous city. According to National Geographic, the province can also be approached from the indigenous perspective, which opens the door to learning about the culture of the natives through walks and workshops through the area’s forests.

The inauguration at the end of last year of the Lane Xang, the train that connects the southwest of China with Laos, from Kumming, in the province of Yunan, passing through Boten and ending in Vientiane, the capital of the country, was a tourist explosion. The railway opens the opportunity to explore an unknown country, with pearls such as Luang Prabang, the former imperial capital, a World Heritage Site.
Ghana
Ghana, a country nestled in the Gulf of Guinea, in West Africa, is not a travel place by internationals, despite having among its attractive virgin beaches, an important fauna and an interesting culture. Its past, marked by the slave trade, has left numerous vestiges of the time, which makes a visit to the country a trip with a large dose of emotion.
Azores
The nine islands that make up the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago located 1,500 kilometers west of the European mainland, have ensured the preservation of a rich ecosystem over the centuries. Santa María, Terceira, Fayal, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa, Flores, Corvo and São Miguel are spectacular, with a great volcanic beauty different from each other. The authorities, aware of their value, carry out outstanding sustainable policies, which include tourism, essential to protect them.
Big Bend National Park, Texas (USA)
Despite having a rich flora and fauna, Big Bend is one of the US national parks that receive the fewest visitors in the entire network. Located in the Chihuahuan desert, an arid and remote area of the state of Texas, it is the habitat of numerous species of cacti and birds such as the roadrunner or the oriole.
