Every two for three we read and listen to news in the automotive sector. What if the steering wheel notifies us when we fall asleep, if the steering wheel stops being round to be a lever like the one in video games, if we can turn the vehicle into a van, a mini bus and other forms at will or, instead, use it to work comfortably and buy products. The list is as large as it is surprising and it does not stop growing.

However, beyond all these curiosities -practical or not- the most anticipated news is autonomous driving . When will the last level of autonomy finally arrive?

Internet connection is essential

Without a doubt, Telefónica’s 5G technology will facilitate these developments, in which cars need to have the minimum latency. But will it be possible for the vehicles to drive completely on their own, without jeopardizing the safety of passengers and other travelers?

As incredible as it may seem to us right now, all the manufacturers are convinced that it is and they venture dates, as is the case with Tesla, Ford and BMW.

Towards a better travel experience

A few years up, a few down, the resounding and unwavering confidence that it will happen, and sooner rather than later, is moving providers around the world to work towards these possible scenarios.

In this sense, one of the most interesting projects is the so-called “Copckit of the Future” or “room of the future“, in its translation into Spanish. This is a Faurecia initiative, in which Accenture, Affectiva and other companies also collaborate, to design a more comfortable travel cabin.

If the future promises journeys without a human pilot, why not suggest that passengers have more space for leisure and rest?

Security, again, is the main stumbling block of these innovations. Although we understand that these types of solutions will not be commercialized until they have first demonstrated their infallibility. The automobile companies will have taken good note after the accidents that have occurred, such as the one in Arizona in 2018, so that they do not occur again.

What does this “room of the future” consist of?

Faurecia’s proposal intends that the journeys be more of an experience than a displacement, where the inconveniences of the trip are hardly noticed. In this way, as the car moves forward, the seats recline backwards, so that passengers can lie down and stretch their legs better. Consequently, of course, the seat belt and the airbag adapt to this new position of the seat.

Likewise, the intelligence of the vehicle itself adapts the light, the temperature and the volume of the sound to each person and also offers the option of massage. Isn’t it amazing?

Furthermore, it could even go so far as to recreate a certain environment, such as the sea, to favor a state of relaxation.

What else?

If you still want entertainment, it is likely that the cars of the future include a cinema mode. Other providers propose that the main moon becomes a giant screen from which to play movies and music, like in the living room at home.

All these pleasures are currently a direction in which cars are heading. There are a few years left until we can enjoy them. Today, what we can enjoy are different smart services, such as Movistar Car, which provides a WiFi network to several devices at the same time, creates alerts for possible breakdowns or appointments with the mechanic, reminds you where you have parked and offers 10 GB of monthly data, in addition to other functions.
